Big Flake - by Brianna Spencer

May 2024 · 4 minute read

Where have you been - oh no wait, where have I been - oopsie I’ve been a flake but what can I say huh?

No calendar this time around because no need, summer is coming to a close, people are shifting back, if we don’t have to think about the date for a bit, why not swim in that a little longer.

Not been listening to music lately so I don’t have a songlist to put on while you scroll, enjoying the silence! But I thirst for movement so if you’ve been listening…please share.

I am working on a farm in a town called Lastur of the Basque Country, herding sheep, crafting up art classes for the three kids who live here, spending days slowly and feeling alive at the end of it all instead of wrung out and scrambled egged. But to return to Portland will be a sweet scene of familiarity with big changes to come. We are ready to go head first in trying to live a little more sustainably beginning with raising rabbits for meat - if that’s not your thing no problem we are all here living different lives and woah what beauty that is.

A new exhibition is in the works even if just in my head and others too but not yet decided on the calendar. I’ll give you a hint - color color color

I have pieces leftover from my last show - Which Way to the Perfumery - which are happily available for purchase! The send off date being August 30th because this is when we will be home and I can send with ease (unless of course you are having shipped to EU in that case let me know and I can get it to you here) see more at the end of this >

Some other more exciting things since I don’t have much juice to offer - well I’ll tell you the farm life is the life for me, to have a fresh cucumber every day of summer is close to godliness and I like it, and I’m not sure if you’ll remember when I talked about clean toenails being the beacon of “got-it-togetherness” a while back but dirt in the toenails on a tanned foot is godliness too as far as I’m concerned.

We buried a horse after it finished it’s nice long 33 years, dug it by hand and covered him with lye, dirt and one hydrangea. To literally bury the horse pushed me into the horse sayings topic since he was done with his life and there’s a few things I’d like to put to rest as well.

So apply as follows in your life because I know we all can - some topics to direct this conversation may be: the brain, the relationship, the family, the career, the advertising, the algorithm for that matter, the anxiety, the physical fight, the connection and the list goes on.

Geez I don’t know if it’s approaching a (still quite persephone-esc) thirty or what but can you stop beating the dead horse - just quit it already. I’m sick and tired of this and I’m ready to live in peace with you or without you too that’s fine no problem! That’s right, no threats here but let’s work together already I mean we want the same things right? Put the stick down and bury the damn thing right here. We’re wasting our time and honestly you’re wasting my energy (not to mention your own) so move on already. Look, let the beast walk into the light so we can live in it’s rays a while longer, that shadow and that stick are no place for you or for me or for anyone- bury it, plant something nice on top, here I brought some seeds and a clipping of my neighbors aloe, maybe we can turn this around and come back to visit it together in peace someday.

Anyway there’s that other one about the gift horse in the face staring thing too, I’ll spare you my writing and just leave it to gratitude being a wildly underrated topic, try to visualize it less in cursive writing in the cafe bathroom and more in your own version, and hey if your own version is the cursive cafe one, who am I to judge :)

pieces which are available to be yours below, please email back (jazznaway@briannaspencer.com) for pricing and details which as usual is sliding scale based on your own sitch.

p.s. thanks to all who have my work now from this show - it was big! Emotionally and really with lots of pieces lots of me in those paintings and big big thanks to Gabi for letting me go wild in the space.

commissions always available and I’m always reachable
