Benavidez wins by 6th round stoppage

May 2024 · 2 minute read

David Benavidez stopped Demetrius Andrade in the 6th round last night in Las Vegas with a dominant performance before calling out Canelo Alvarez.

After scoring a knockdown in the fourth round with a powerful straight right hand, Benavidez continued his assault in the fifth and sixth, which prompted Andrade’s team to stop the fight in the corner.

The first three rounds were competitive as Andrade and Benavidez traded power punches in the centre of the ring and Andrade was even able to force the Mexican Monster on the ropes.

However, as the bout wore on, the power of Andrade’s punches seemed to decrease, while Benavidez used his superior size, strength, and work rate to take control of the contest.

Despite taking numerous flush punches in the sixth round, Andrade never stopped trying to gain Benavidez’s respect, but the former two-weight division world champion was ultimately not powerful enough.

With his victory, Benavidez improved his unbeaten record to 28-0 with 24 KOs and retained the WBC Interim Super Middleweight Championship.

And the 26-year-old is keen to finally step into the ring with Canelo for a shot at the Undisputed Super Middleweight Championship.

“I think that’s the only question people want to hear,” said Benavidez

“I got three WBC belts here, I’m the best in the division. If they want to give me an opportunity now or later. Imma keep winning. Like I said, I’m going to be the greatest of my generation by the time I’m done and my job is not complete until I make that happen.”

Meanwhile, Andrade suffered the first loss of his professional boxing career after 32 consecutive wins, yet has no plans to retire.
