Located on Glades Road in The Arts and Crafts Community outside the bustle of downtown Gatlinburg is Morning Mist Cafe, a lunch spot you can easily find in the Morning Mist Village of shops. The arts and crafts loop is a worthwhile drive if you’re seeking unique, one-of-a-kind items for your souvenir collection. That can be a problem when shopping the Parkway in town. There are many shops that have like items that are made to sell in quantities, not necessarily with quality in mind. Speaking of quality, let’s sink our teeth into some edible selections from this tiny cafe.
The first thing to notice outside the Morning Mist Cafe is the menu strategically placed next to the entrance. This is a major plus for someone as indecisive as myself. Bonus points for a menu with prices as well. I was in desperate need of nourishment at this time, so I decided to give it a whirl.
I was thinking about a few options—including a salad—but I was intrigued by a menu item that was unlike anything I’ve had before. This was the Morning Mist Chicken. It’s not a common combination to have a slice of Granny Smith apple, and homemade peach jalapeno jam on a grilled chicken sandwich, but I had to put away my curiosity once and for all by ordering it. I was told they have the best burgers in Gatlinburg; however, that will have to wait for a future visit.
The cafe is small and does have outside seating, which adds to the ambiance. There’s nothing fancy about it, and I happen to like the simple Southern restaurant feel. I was seated by the window that had peaceful views of the small creek that runs adjacent to the building. If you don’t get that quiet Smoky Mountain perspective being here, then you’re in the wrong place. I loved it!
Service was perfect. I felt a little sorry for the lady, as she seemed to be a one-woman operation, running the register, seating, and serving guests. But she handled it like a pro. It wasn’t busy, but juggling all these chores would send the novice server into a tailspin. She was friendly, and beamed with a bright ray of Southern hospitality that was undeniable.
I also got the impression I was being served by the man who cooked my food. The only drawback about the food was that the side options didn’t fit my tastes, with the only exception being my choice—a small fruit side cup. That’s not his fault, though. I’m sure if you’re a fan of cole slaw and potato salad, it’s some good stuff. It’s just not my bag, and that’s my fault.
Are you wondering how I thought of the Morning Mist Chicken? Well, I’m going to say, from memory, it’s the best grilled chicken sandwich I’ve ever had. It looked like a hodgepodge of ingredients that might not work together if done wrong. Somehow, it worked better than I could’ve imagined. The flavors were harmonious and sang a beautiful tune in my mouth. Gouda cheese with apples and jam? Amazing! The chicken savoriness met the sweetness with a combination that tasted original and pure. It felt like I was visiting someone’s grandmother’s house and she said, “you have to try this!” I was all about it!
Overall, this is a five-star lunch spot I supremely recommend if you’re shopping in The Arts and Crafts Community in Gatlinburg and need a bite to eat. Hours are limited, so don’t wait until later in the afternoon. Get here around normal lunch hours, sit, and enjoy a fantastic home-cooked meal you won’t regret! Remember: It’s just my opinion, but this was a gem of an experience for me!
