What is a yogin, what is a yogi and are they interchangeable terms?

Thank you Amelia, for renewing this inquiry for me, and I'm sure for others!

Since reading this a few days ago I have been struck by the degree to which the term "yogini" has always disturbed me! I notice that I never use it because my discomfort is so strong. When I first heard it I wondered if, as a woman I was being less respected than my male counterparts. I asked at the time, why is a yogini different from a yogi and why do I rail against the term? The answer I arrived at was that obviously, a yogini needed to be separated from yogis because they were not just different, but less-than in some way.

I appreciate your thoughtful and thorough look at this. I hope we will all at least consider where the idea of yogini comes from and whether or not we want to take it on. I'm grateful for this post..
